Diabetes in cats does not generally lead to blindness. However, loss of sight may happen as your cat gets older, or as other conditions appear. Fortunately, cats do not rely on their sight as much as humans. With these small adjustments, cats can continue to live happy, full lives for a long time despite losing sight.
Blind cats use their enhanced senses of smell, hearing and touch (whiskers and other vibrissae hairs on their feet and their face) to compensate for their vision loss. In fact, most people may not even be aware that your cat is blind until you tell them.
Tips
Avoid changing the furniture around so your cat knows the way around your house and does not bump into things. Keep pathways clear of obstacles, toys etc. If you make changes, guide your cat initially by walking him on a lead and letting him familiarize himself with the changes. Like for small children, think of protecting corners and angles with rubber pads.
Avoid moving around your cat's litter tray, food bowl and favorite cushion.
Your cat's sense of smell is highly developed and accurate. Put that to good use by using different scents around the house. For instance, apply a pleasant scent to guide him around the house. Use another smell to indicate obstacles and dangers and train your cat to recognize what that smell is used for.
Auditory cues are important also. On entering a room, signal yourself by clapping your hands or calling his name. Talk to him before petting him. Tap a piece of furniture to let your cat know that it is in his way. Use your voice to guide him and teach him new commands.
A blind cat will feel nervous about his condition therefore it is important to show patience. Use treats and positive reinforcements and train your cat in a familiar environment where he feels confident.
The older the cat, the harder it is for him to adjust to loss of sight which can be accompanied by the loss of other senses. Be patient, give your cat plenty of attention and care.
Diabetes in cats is a manageable condition. No matter what amount of special home care your sick cat will require from you, he remains the same ball of fur who will give you endless hours of
